Beginners’ guide: How to lay paving slabs

Paving Preparation:

  • Measure and plan your project carefully.
  • Order the right amount of stone.
  • Consider renting equipment like a mini excavator for larger areas to save time.
  • Ensure good drainage to avoid water pooling on the surface.
  • Mark out your area using a tape measure or string.
  • Dig down about 15 cm (6 inches) deep.

The Sub-Base:

  • Spread crushed concrete evenly over the area.
  • Compact it thoroughly with a vibrating plate machine.
  • Aim for a thickness of at least 7.5 cm (3 inches).

Preparing A Cement Mix:

  • Wear safety gloves.
  • Mix 4 or 5 parts building sand, 1 part cement, and water until smooth.
  • Apply a 5 cm (2 inches) thick perimeter course of mortar to the sub-base.

Laying the Paving Slabs:

  • Lift stones properly to avoid back strain.
  • Get help for heavy stones and wear steel-toe boots.
  • Position each stone flat on the mortar.
  • Use a rubber mallet to tap stones to the right level and slope.
  • Check for consistent gaps and edge levels.
  • Let it set for 24-48 hours.

Final Touches and Sealing:

  • Fill gaps between slabs with jointing compound.
  • Spread the compound using a trowel and brush.
  • Make it smooth for a neat look.
  • Optionally, apply a sealer to protect the paving from weather.

Allow any efflorescence to develop before sealing to avoid trapping it in the stone. If there’s no sign after 6-8 weeks, you should be okay to seal.
